5 Tips for Effective Winter Hair Care

To minimize the risk of hair damage throughout winter, consider the following tips:

1. Invest in a Humidifier

As temperatures drop outside, you will likely start turning the temperature up in your home. While this can make your home more comfortable, it will also pull the moisture out of the air and your hair. To prevent this from happening, invest in a suitable humidifier for key areas of your home. This will allow you to stay warm without stripping your hair of much-needed moisture.

2. Get Regular Trims

Trimming your hair every 4 to 8 weeks is a great wait to keep your hair happy and healthy. Even taking half an inch off the bottom is enough to drastically reduce the risk of developing dry and split ends, making it well worth your time. These trims will also give a professional a chance to look at your hair and make recommendations if your hair has become damaged, giving you the information you need for optimal hair health.

3. Avoid Heat

As we mentioned earlier, heat can strip moisture from your hair. While the heat in your home is a major concern, it is also important to minimize the use of hot water in the shower and avoid heat styling. While it may not be as comfortable, try to shower with lukewarm water and let your hair air dry when you are done as this will allow your hair to retain moisture.

4. Do not Leave Your Home with wet Hair

We know that everyone has a busy schedule, but it is important to remember that wet hair is more vulnerable to damage than dry hair. Walking outside in winter with wet hair can cause it to freeze and break. Be sure to allow enough time for your hair to air dry before going outside.

5. Wash Your Hair Less

If you are someone who washes your hair every day, it may be time to change your routine. Over-washing your hair will strip it of natural oils that keep your hair and scalp moisturized and protected. Try only washing your hair every other day or every three days, as this will help you keep your hair clean without drying it out. In addition to washing your hair less, be sure to perform a deep conditioning at least once or twice per week.
